(JP’s book review, rule one “ Stand up straight with your shoulders back”)
If you only read the conclusion from Jorden Peterson’s article, you would think everything he wants to share is very old school. The most valuable parts are the story he shares, and how he refers to the antidote.
He told you how reality works, and how to face to it then survive in the real world. Our media and education usually avoids discourse to human nature, because it is not politically correct. But only if we understand reality then we are able to solve the issue. As a left wing, I barely read the conservative right wing’s book, but after I read Jorden Peterson book, I realized most of the left wing focuses on how to create an ideal world and how to be more equal. However, the big issue is that they usually forget that we have not changed the world yet. So how can we survive before the world is changed?
For example, in chapter one he used a lobster to refer to how our society works, our society is competitive, and the natural way of the world will naturally select the winner. If resources are limited creatures are going to fight for their territory. Do you think the cute little bird won’t be selfish? No, all animals compete to survive. When they are singing, it might mean claiming their territory. When the lobster wins the fight, their brain will release more serotonin. The lobster that loses will waste a lot of energy on uncertainty and insecurity. It is also cycle in which the winner becomes stronger and it will be easier to win future fights.
He didn’t say we need to gain a higher social status, but he just implies that if you always avoid challenges you will be more unhappy and lower your social level. Your anxiety system won’t know you are actually about to face truly dangerous situations, your system only detects it when you run away. Therefore, we must face risky situations. So we need to be stronger minded people, and we need to take responsibility.
Most people believe they are built with the notion that they cannot fight back. For instance, one may have the ability to be successful and rise up. But due to reasons such as social stability and a dominant hierarchy it is never done.
